How to Write News Releases that Get Noticed
by Gianna Lazarou
Publication editors tend to treat unimpressive news releases the same way you treat junk mail – they delete it promptly. Editors get hundreds of news releases every day. The time they spend to read your news release is only a few seconds. They just read the headline first. If it appeals they read further on, if it doesn’t they move on. The trick is to catch their attention in these precious few seconds.
So to start with, make your headline as catchy as possible. But do not make it sound like an ad campaign. Let the headline refer to a current and happening topic. Make the headline short and interesting.
If you chose a topic that has become stale, obviously nobody will be interested. So select a topic that’s newsworthy and is current. Forget the editor and think about the reader. Focus on what the reader wants and
if you pick a topic that the reader would love then the editor will select it too.
Write like a professional journalist. Answer questions like where, what, why, when, how etc. Editors want facts and not fluff. Represent facts in your news release; if possible in the first paragraph itself.
Keep the news release short. Editors are overwhelmed with materials they have to read on a daily basis. Even if it’s interesting, they would appreciate if your news release is not unnecessarily long. Short news releases are preferable.
Avoid jargons and acronyms.
Proof your news release. Ensure that there are no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. All your good efforts like selecting a good topic, providing all the facts etc. will get washed off if you do not pay attention to this detail. Your copy needs to be error free. If you are not sure of your own
proofing skills then hire a professional and make sure that the news release can be sent off for printing without any rectifications.
You may include a photograph, chart or any such thing that you may deem it necessary. That will definitely add value to your news release.
Do not hesitate to send samples. If yours is a company dealing with aromatherapy, sending a sample will definitely be appreciated by the editor and this is a sure way of getting attention. Sending samples doesn’t mean that you will compromise on the quality of the writing. There is a chance that the sample will be used and the information you have sent may not be read.
So to ensure that your news release gets noticed make your writing is good and if possible add a sample.
If you follow these rules, there is no reason why your news release will not get noticed.
