Ten Mistakes in a Website
by Chrysovalantis Mitsakos
With the availability and ease of many new software programs all guaranteed to make website design simple enough for anyone, virtually everyone is making their own website. It’s not a complicated procedure at all and once you’ve done it, you’re apt to want to do it again and again. Although a highly-trafficked consumer goods or information site is very different than a personal page there are common mistakes found on both. You can improve visitor comfort and also the amount of return traffic by ensuring you don’t make these mistakes on your site:
1. Check all spelling and grammar. Nothing is more distracting on a website than poorly written text. If you aren’t a writer, hire one to do it for you. 2. Pick a bold and readable font type and color. If you’ve ever tried reading a light pink font on a white background you know how difficult it is. Pick a text that is large enough to be read by everyone and also a neutral and very visible color. 3. Avoid pop-ups. Although many websites rely heavily on advertisers for profits, if at all possible, try and avoid pop-ups. Many people find these annoying and will actually leave a website just because of the pop-ups. 4. Easy navigation. Visitors to your website want to easily understand how to get to the information they seek. With an easy to use navigation system that consists of links, buttons or bullets, they can do this. 5. Animation. In order to fully access websites that have animation graphics, many visitors will need to download software or updates to software. This will likely lead to some visitors abandoning the site in search of another. 6. Bad links. If you have links to other sites on your site, check them regularly to
ensure they still work. 7. Large images or graphics. These can take time to download on some computers and can be frustrating to visitors. 8. Never providing updates. Repeat visitors want to see fresh content, so take some time to update your site every few weeks. 9. Browser windows. If you have your site set-up in a manner that requires a new browser window to open each time a link is pressed, this can make the computer sluggish and the screen cluttered. 10. Borrowing material from other sites. Unless you have an agreement with another site, don’t use their text or images. You may infringe on their copyright rights and be liable.
If you aren’t sure how to build and present a website that will be appealing to everyone who visits, hire a professional. Most of them are very reasonable in their costs and you’re sure to be happy with the results.
