Create a Noticeable CV
by Chrysovalantis Mitsakos
When it comes time to make a curriculum vitae (CV) be certain that you make it special. Employers are subjected to looking at many applicants for jobs and you want yours to stand out from the crowd. The following tips are sure fire techniques for creating a noticeable CV:
• Check it over carefully for spelling mistakes. Even if you use a word processing program to create your curriculum vitae that has a spell checker, you need to take it a step further. If it’s at all possible, have someone else read it over for you before you print it. Another set of eyes can help find small mistakes you may have overlooked. • Don’t include unnecessary personal information. Some people think it’s wise to state their gender and martial situation on their CV. This is information that should never be listed. • Check the dates carefully. When you are listing your employment and educational history, be certain you have the dates right. If a date doesn’t compute, perhaps you put the wrong year in and a potential employer notices this, it can cause him or her to automatically not consider you any longer. Attention to detail is vital. • Don’t list too much information. On your CV you should include the college or university you attended. If you have yet to graduate from high school, list the name of the school you are currently attending. Anything beyond that is of no interest to an employer. The same is true of your previous jobs. The last two to three jobs you’ve held are sufficient. • Check your references before listing them. Most people stick with the
same references on their CV for years. This may be a great idea or it could be a problem. If you haven’t spoken to a reference in several years initiate contact again before sending out a CV. The reason is that you don’t want a potential employer calling someone who then says they haven’t heard from you in some time.
Many people are tempted to print their CV on brightly colored paper in order to make it more noticeable. This isn’t a good idea as it can suggest that you don’t take your career seriously. Instead print your CV on a good, white bond paper using a very dark text. When a potential employer sees this, they know that you mean business and they will be more likely to consider you for the job.
