Start a Massage Business as a Freelancer
by Gianna Lazarou
Health care is one of the best fields to pursue in a career sense. More and more people are becoming aware of how to take better care of their bodies. They have no qualms investing money in a gym membership, purchasing products that help them look and feel young and getting a massage regularly to relax. To start a massage business as a freelance contractor is a great idea. This is something that both men and women can pursue if they have the skills and the personality to be a success.
In order to work as a freelance massage therapist you need be trained. Many schools now offer diploma courses in massage therapy. These courses cover both the basics of the human anatomy and also practical lessons in massage techniques. This is crucial to have as performing something as delicate as a massage can irritate and even damage many muscles if not done properly.
Once a person has completed their training they are ready to begin taking on clients. Massage therapy is one business that relies very heavily on reputation. If you are a skillful massage therapist, work will get around, and before long you’ll have clients lined up to see you.
Many people who follow this path find it helpful to work with an already established massage business first. This affords them time to learn the business side of providing massage therapy and also helps to build a strong clientele. Although most businesses frown on therapists taking customers once they leave, truth be told, if a client enjoys your techniques, they will seek you out themselves once you venture out as a freelancer.
There is some
cost involved when you go down this career path. You will need some equipment when you start a massage business as a freelancer; namely a portable massage table. Although you may be tempted to purchase an inexpensive model consider the fact that you want your clients to call you again and again. For this reason buying a good quality comfortable table is the best idea.
Although you’ll be working according to your own rules, set your services at a reasonable price. Many massage clients typically tip so you won’t have to pad the price too much. Also be sure you don’t become so overzealous that you overbook. You need to be able to give every customer a great massage, so if you can only perform a few every day, don’t work beyond your own limit.
