Take Care of your Employ’s Psychology

by Anna Chasomeri

Employers have many things they need to be responsible for on a daily basis. Ensuring that their employees are well taken care of is one of them. In order to take care of not only their physical but emotional and psychological needs, an employer has to understand people in general.

There are certain things that any business owner or employer can do to help take care of their employee’s psychology needs. One is to create a work environment that stresses the importance of open and honest communication. Many employees feel that they can’t share any details about issues they may be struggling with, with their boss. If this is the case the employee can start to become stressed because they have so much to deal with. If an employer makes him or herself approachable this automatically suggests to the employee that they are open to talking.

Employers should ask about the employee’s family life on a regular basis. Although some individuals feel this is crossing an etiquette line, it’s only forming a non-business relationship between two co-workers. If an employee feels their boss is interested in their spouse and children, they are more apt to talk with them should a problem arise at home, such as an illness. This can help the employer by understanding if the employee seems distracted or needs time off.

It’s also important for an employer to pay special attention to any employee who seems to be harboring anger or resentment. Often people don’t feel they have an outlet where they can talk about what is troubling them. In rare cases this type of tension can build within a person until it reaches a point of rage. If this happens it puts everyone around the person at risk. Having a therapist available at no charge to all employees can help curb such incidents. Although some employees may feel hesitant to seek out counseling provided by their employers it should be stressed to everyone in the workplace that the sessions and anything discussed therein remains strictly confidential.

Giving employees extra days off each year for mental health days can also help take care of their psychological well being. These days are akin to traditional sick days save for the fact that the employee just has to mention that he or she is taking a mental health day. No other questions need be asked and the employee should view those days as a way for them to recharge and get back in touch with their own lives.
