Safety in Transactions through Internet
by Lazaros Chasomeris
Most of us have bought at least one thing from the Internet over the past few years. It’s incredibly convenient and in many cases is a cheaper route than driving to a mall or retail outlet to find what you need. In this age of high tech criminals everyone needs to be aware of the methods that ensure that the financial transactions they complete online are safe and secure.
First and foremost you need to be aware of what a secured site is. This is a website that uses encryption to complete financial transactions. If you are ever tempted to purchase something from a website that doesn’t use this technology, please don’t. You will notice as you go through the purchase process that the site will have a certificate that states it’s a secure site. Look for this each time you
decide to buy something online.
Many websites also ask for personal information as a means to positively identify who you are. Typical examples of this may be the security code found on the back of your credit card, your home and business telephone number as well as your birth date. You’ll also need to provide the same address you have your credit card statements mailed to. The reason they ask for this is to use it to confirm your identity with the credit card company. If you provide incorrect information there is a likely chance that the transaction won’t be approved.
It’s also not a good idea to use a community or public computer when you are going to purchase an item online. Almost all computers including those that the public has access to in libraries, cafes or schools, retains
the browser history for a pre-set period of time. If you enter sensitive information such as your credit card number, this may be accessible by others who log onto the same computer. For this reason it’s a good idea to either complete your purchase on your own computer or do it offline.
Some people actually feel more secure and confident using a credit card with a very low credit line on it to purchase items online. This is a valuable approach in that if the number does fall into the wrong hands, the damage that can be done is very minimal. However, most major credit card companies have provisions in place in case someone’s card is used without their permission. If you have concerns about this ask your credit card company about their position on unauthorized usage.
