Start a Furniture Maintenance Business

by Chrysovalantis Mitsakos

If you’re someone who loves picking up antique or well-used furniture items and then revitalizing them, you may want to consider starting a furniture maintenance business. This is something that can be started on a part-time basis in your basement or garage. All you need is the passion to help restore other people’s furniture pieces and some know-how.

When you first start a furniture maintenance business you need to carefully consider the services you are willing to offer. It’s very helpful if you have a large truck that accommodates the transportation of different sizes of furniture. Although you will probably feel inclined to do house-calls (on-site visits where you look at the piece that needs maintenance or repair) you’ll likely want to do all work on your own premises.

The services that you may provide include:

• Repairing and/or reapplying the finish on wood pieces. Over time and with regular use, wood furniture can lose its gloss and shine. Also water rings can appear. Redoing the finish can actually completely change the look of a table or chair making it appear new again.
• Reupholstering pieces. Many antique and even late model furniture pieces are covered by fabric. If a rip or tear appears, of if the fabric wears thin, it will need to be reupholstered. With the correct tools this isn’t a complicated job at all.
• Fixing cracked or chipped items. When furniture is placed in an active space, damage can sometimes occur. In the case of wood pieces, splinters, cracks and breaks happen. This is a painstaking job but also very satisfying when done properly.

One important point to keep in sight when you start a furniture maintenance business is that the work you will be doing is incredibly important. This is particularly true of antique items or furniture pieces that have been passed from one generation to the next in a family. You want to ensure that you deliver it back to your clients in as perfect condition as possible.

As your reputation grows you’ll likely need to consider expanding. Naturally there are both positives and negatives to this; the income and the time involved respectively being two. If you want to stay true to your quality of work, either hire someone who values the job as much as you do or continue to pursue it on a smaller scale. Either way you’ll find it very rewarding.
