A right name for your business is vital and yet can be quite difficult to get the right one. A mixture of creativity and common sense is needed to get to your goal.

  • Keep it short

Think of a memorable business and it will probably have a short name, Apple, Microsoft, Ebay etc. all have short names, in fact you could say the smaller the business the shorter the name. Keeping it short means people have to type in less to get to your website, this means there is less room for spelling mistakes.

  • World Wide Web

One of the things you will probably do is get yourself a website and domain name. A domain name comes with a tld like .com, .org. .net. The de facto tld is .com, however many successful businesses run on alternative tld’s and if the name you chose is already registered you will either have to chose another business name or pick an alternative tld.

  • Trademark Names

It is vital you do not pick a name that is trademarked, if you do you will end up on the end of a lawsuit. Companies spend millions of dollars building their name and will spend equal amounts of defending it. Even a smaller company will protect their name as it is the source of their reputation and what they are known and recognised by. There was a time when a business would buy back a domain name that was registered before they got to it, now they just make a call to their lawyer.

  • Act Quick

Domain names get snatched up very quickly. If you have an idea for a name best to quickly check with a domain name registrar if the name is still free, buying it if it is. Most tld’s are cheap enough to make it an impulse purchase. You may also consider buying other tld’s this will stop any competitor buying them and benefiting from your success. It may even be sensible to buy up domains with obvious spelling mistakes.

  • Get feedback

After you have a number of possible names, get feedback from friends and family and possibly future customers. If any stink they will soon let you know. Make sure your sample area is big enough and you ask as many people as you can. You never know, someone else may come up with a better idea than you.
