Start an Elevator Repair Business

by Chrysovalanti Mitsakos

One of the most lucrative businesses anyone can start in a major metropolitan city is an elevator repair business. How many of us have been stuck either between floors in a stuffy elevator or left to walk the stairs because the elevator never made it? This seems to happen on a daily basis. Most tall buildings that come equipped with elevators don’t have a repairman on staff. The reason is simple – it’s cost. Why pay someone a salary when their services are only needed on occasion?

That’s where an elevator repair business comes in. These businesses are much like the fire or police department. When the call comes in, they need to be ready to roll. The key to success of any business like this is reputation. If you are known for being quick to the site and efficient and meticulous with your work, your client list will grow.

You certainly don’t need to know how to repair an elevator yourself to own a company that provides maintenance and repair. However, you do need licensed elevator repairmen who know exactly what they are doing.

Years ago, many individuals learned how to fix elevators by taking on an internship with an elevator repair business. With the risk of lawsuits, you don’t want to hire anyone who doesn’t have a license to repair this type of equipment.

The best approach to beginning any business is to check with the local laws concerning zone and what permits are required. Insurance is also a major consideration when you are starting a business like this. Once that is in place it’s time to hire very experienced individuals and get the word out that you are open for business.

Many companies do well by placing advertisements in their local telephone directories and also contacting the maintenance departments of buildings in their general vicinity. Cost is important in the elevator repair business and many times new clients will hire a company based largely on how expensive or in some cases, inexpensive their time and labor is.

If you are offering both maintenance and emergency elevator repair service you’ll have to price accordingly. It’s important to have someone on call all hours of the day, every day in case of an emergency elevator break-down. Obviously in a situation like this the fees you’ll charge will be considerably higher.

Starting an elevator repair business and offering quality, reliable and dependable service at an affordable rate is the right path to success. Elevators will always be around, so this is a great career path to follow.
