How to Start a Plumbing Business

by Gianna Lazarou

In today’s economy it’s becoming clearer and clearer that branching out on your own and starting your own business can be very lucrative. Many people take the skills that they’ve honed for years and start very successful businesses. This can be done in almost every occupation including plumbing.

If you have a background in plumbing and are considering starting your own business there are a few things to keep in mind including:

· Local licensing and registrations. Before you begin any business, including a plumbing business, you need to be fully aware of any local laws in place regarding running a small business. In most cities there is a business development office which employs people who are ready and willing to explain what is required. You will probably need to fill out several forms and pay a fee in order to obtain a business license.
· Decide on the size of your business. If you are a plumber yourself, you may be considering promoting yourself as a contractor. In this case you would find the work yourself, do the work and handle all the billing. If you have higher aspirations you might want to consider hiring other plumbers as well and treating them as employees. If you believe that you have enough potential work to keep several individuals busy than the second choice may be right for you. If you are just beginning to test the waters of the local plumbing market, being a sole operator might be the way to go for now.
· Find customers. This can prove to be the most challenging part of starting your new plumbing business. If you are already well known in your community as a plumber, than you may be able to find customers through the contact base you had from your previous employer. You’ll also need to think about how to promote yourself.

As with any new business, time is your biggest asset. It takes time and patience to build any successful business. As is the case with most service industries, plumbers tend to find most of their clientele through word of mouth. Therefore is you are supplying great service at a reasonable cost to your current customers they are more likely to tell their friends about you when they are looking for a plumber. Remember that every customer is a potential contact for new customers and treat them accordingly.
