Starting Your Own Restaurant
by Lazaros Chasomeris
Well, if you have decided to start your own restaurant then good luck to you. Before you start let’s just see if you have taken in to account a few things.
What will be special about your restaurant? Will it be the food, the service, the ambience, the price or a combination of all the four or any two or three of the four? First and foremost, the food you offer must have good taste. Restaurants do not run well because of the interior or the service. They are important, but the prime reason people go to a restaurant is to eat. So the food has to be really good. Whether it’s Chinese, Continental, Mexican or Italian, whatever the food category is, it has to be good in it’s class. That is the first step in running your own restaurant.
Next is the pricing: it has to be reasonable. Depending on the locality and the ambience
you provide, the pricing has to be justifiable. If you price your dishes higher that may dissuade customers, despite the good taste. It always makes sense to charge a low price and keep a low profit margin to attract more customers then keep a steep profit margin.
After you have priced it right, the dishes need to be served by a courteous staff. Right from ushering in to taking orders and serving, the staff needs to be polite and professional. You will have to boost their morale from time to time. They should be adequately compensated to render service cheerfully. If your restaurant is a family run one make sure that no unsuitable family member gains entry. Allocate work to your family members according to their temperaments.
Select a strategically important place for setting up the restaurant. Keep your restaurant clean. Decorate it tastefully as per your budget. If you can afford, you can always
hire musicians to perform at your restaurant. The customers always love a romantic set up. Celebrate events from time to time.
Give away food on occasions to special customers. If a regular customer is celebrating marriage anniversary then declare a few food items that they order as ‘on-the-house’.
If you are starting the restaurant with a small budget don’t feel shy. People will appreciate it if the food you prepare is tasty and contribute by visiting you regularly. Small restaurants have their own charm.
On the tax front keep all the bills and logs of payments you make. Maintain a log of the miles your car is used for business purpose. You will be eligible to deduct these expenses from your taxable income in the tax return file.
If you take care of these, in a few years your restaurant will have branches all over the city and you will be laughing your way to the bank.
