Mistakes that Small Businesses Commonly Make
by Gianna Lazarou
Owning your own business is a dream that many people have. For those who are more adventurous they may leap into the business ownership pool with both feet. Unless they are prepared for everything that is involved with running a business they can face many difficulties along the way.
A few of the more common mistakes you want to be aware of include:
• Not managing personnel properly. One of the worst things that any small business owner can do is to hire people close to them. Many small business owners hire family members and friends to work for them. When the employee needs a personal favor such as an extra day off or an advance on a pay check, the owner feels compelled to do it. This can lead to not only problems within the
friendship but the business will suffer directly as well. • Having unrealistic goals. It’s very uncommon for a small business to burst onto the market and make a killing its first year. Building up clientele takes years and unless you are prepared to spend years slowly building your budding business you will become frustrated very quickly. • Not understanding what customers want. Although you may think you have a great idea, it won’t prove successful unless others agree with you. Too many people develop a product based on the idea that the product they are offering will sell itself. Unless you have a product that people can use in their everyday lives you won’t be successful. Think about your potential customers when deciding what to offer. • Not using advertising effectively. Your advertising dollars are priceless and you
need to choose advertising that will reach your potential customer base. Do some research to come up with new and innovative approaches to advertising. This is truly one area where you need to get the most bang for your buck.
Beginning any business is a serious undertaking. You will have to invest funds to make funds and therefore it’s crucial that you try and avoid mistakes at all costs. If you go into the venture with the understanding that you need to stay grounded and focused you are more likely to succeed.
Remember that it never hurts to turn to others for advice. Surround yourself with people who have built up their own businesses and watch and learn from them. Owning your own business, even a small business is a wonderfully enriching experience.
