Distinguish between work and family priorities
It is important to know the difference between family and work priorities, but it is also important to know where they overlap. Do you work to support your family or do you have a family so you can work more effectively. Probably the former. Sometimes when these two are mixed badly it can be horrendous. So have a clearly marked out line to divide the two. To accomplish this write down all things that relate to work only, all things that are family only and the third would be where priorities mix. The important thing is to know which thing you value and not to confuse them with fleeting, not so important issues.
Turn Priorities into goals
By turning your priorities into goals you can segment the goal and use smaller stepping stone goals to get to the ultimate goal. By doing this things become much more manageable and less intimidating. You can also identify what each of your priority needs in the sense of outside help and other tools.
Develop a calendar/diary system
To manage time you must know what you must be doing at a certain time. When chunking your larger goals down you will need an effective calendar system to be able to know what you need to be doing and when. Organising your calendar in a colour co-ordinated fashion will enable you to know how the important the tasks to be completed are that day.

Telephone Calls
Telephone calls can be a huge time killer. When a vital project needs to be completed take the phone off the hook.
Inability to make a decision
Sometimes you can be faced with a decision where there is no right or wrong answer. This can cripple you time wise, if the outcome has no major affect to your underlying business toss a coin and go with that.
Poor Record keeping
If you spend half your time looking for that special piece of paper, developing a system that is efficient can significantly increase the amount of time you
have available.
Poor Self-discipline
Discipline is the cornerstone to any time management system If you do not control your urges you will be constantly drifting into areas that are potentially wasting time.
Multitasking
With multiple options constantly available to us in the multi digital channel age, we constantly have an infinite number of things we can do. Although doing more than one thing at a time may seem like it’s saving time, you can actually only think of one thing at a time, therefore reducing the concentration you have on any task.
TV
If you find TV is a constant distraction, move so that the TV is not in view. If you have a project you wish to complete and a TV show you want to see, record the show and watch it later. Invest in a Tivo if you have to.
Browsing the Internet
Anyone who works on a computer and is connected to the Web has the problem of being distracted by the Web. Sometimes I use the computer in places I cannot get Internet access to aid focus on a task.
